50 Most Visited AI Tools Over The Last 12 Months

In our comprehensive exploration of the AI industry, we spotlighted 50 tools that have gained the most significant visits globally.

Collectively accounting for over 24 billion traffic, these tools highlight the global community’s growing affinity for AI-driven solutions.

Here’s an overview of the 50 most visited AI tools from September 2022 to August 2023.

AI Industry: Traffic Growth Over the Last 12 Months

AI Industry: Traffic growth over the last 12 months

Over the last 12 months, the AI industry has been one of the most significant tech developments we’ve seen in a long time. During the starting month of our study, September 2022, the tools we analyzed generated 241.8 million visits.

As you can see in the graph, the total traffic of all 50 tools saw a 10.7x growth rate over the studied period.

But during the final month, August 2023, these tools generated a staggering 2.8 billion visits.

To put that into perspective, it’s a 2.6 billion traffic increase from the starting month to the end of our study.

This equals an average 236.3M monthly visit increase over the studied 12 months.

But where did it all start?

The jump really kicked off last November - when ChatGPT became the fastest-ever platform to reach 1 million users (in just 5 days).

After the initial boom, the hype kept on climbing all the way until May 2023, when monthly visits peaked at around 4.1 billion. That’s the first time we saw a pullback of 1.2 billion in the industry's traffic.

The average traffic throughout the period was 2 billion per month.

But interestingly, if we only look at the last 6 months, the average traffic was 3.3 billion per month.

It’s been very rare for an emerging tech trend like AI to generate this much interest.

And even after the pullback and decline of 1.2 billion visits, interest is still huge - with the total industry interest hovering at around 10.7x growth from the previous year.

To put this into perspective, VCs and investors could have picked almost any of the larger horses in the AI race and safely made a 3-10x in just one year (assuming interest reflects in finances and user base).

What Caused The Pullback and 1.2 Billion Traffic Loss?

One area that we wanted to investigate is the 1.2 billion traffic loss and pullback the AI industry saw after the 4.1 billion visits peak, highlighted in our previous graph.

There have been numerous reports on Yahoo Finance and Nasdaq asking whether the AI bubble is already popping. Much of them came just after the later stages of our study, from June to August 2023.

However, it’s difficult to pinpoint which market stage we are in because the AI tech trend differs from what we’ve seen before.

Some potential explanations include:

  1. Regulatory Changes: Governments could implement stringent regulations that affect how AI companies operate, potentially stifling innovation or user engagement. For instance, stricter data privacy laws might restrict data collection, impacting AI services that rely on user data.
  2. Economic Burnout: The industry may have burned out some hype around many tools. While the interest overall is still huge, around 10.7x the previous year, the period of hype where everyone is just checking out tools may have calmed down a little.
  3. Shifts in Consumer Preferences: Trends and public opinion can change rapidly, and a shift in user trust or interest due to ethical concerns or a preference for non-AI solutions could impact traffic.
  4. Adoption of Mobile Apps: AI companies may have developed mobile apps, leading users to access services directly on their phones instead of web browsers. This shift can cause web traffic to decline even if overall user engagement remains high or grows as activity moves from traditional websites to mobile platforms.

It’s likely a mix of all of the above and other reasons, too. ChatGPT launched its app on IOS in May and Android app in July.

This was around when ChatGPT’s pullback happened, which likely affected the rest of the industry as well.

It’s also improbable for a tech trend to rise nonstop without any pullbacks. So, while we can always seek areas of improvement and innovation, it’s unlikely the AI bubble has popped already, based on our analysis.

Top 10 AI Traffic Gainers: Net Growth Analysis

Top 10 AI Traffic Gainers Net Growth Analysis

The AI landscape is evolving at a rapid pace, with tools gaining and losing traction based on a multitude of factors.

This chart showcases the top gainers regarding net traffic volume increase from September 2022 to August 2023.

Most importantly, this does not purely reflect the most visited tools but emphasizes the net change in traffic.

Notably absent from this list are Quillbot and Midjourney, which, although the 3rd and 4th most visited tools, experienced a drop in traffic by 5.1M and 8.7M, respectively.

Let's delve deeper into each of these top gainers.

1. ChatGPT (Net Growth: 1.8B Visits)

To no surprise, ChatGPT wins the first spot when it comes to the top gainers during the period of our study.  As an industry leader, it’s no surprise that after it jumped to 1 million users last November, it continued to grow rapidly.

However, it did decline with the rest of the industry during the pullback, losing over 779M traffic from June 23 to Aug 23. But this could also partly be explained by its mobile app launch, which we discussed earlier.

Take a deeper look at the numbers below:

  • Launched: Nov 2022
  • Number of Months Considered: 10 months
  • Total Traffic (Nov 22 - Aug 23): 14,589,516,239 (14.6B)

Janitor AI stands out in the world of conversational AI platforms, uniquely designed to engage in not-safe-for-work (NSFW) interactions.  It also enables users to create their own NSFW chatbots.

Although the amount of traffic and interest this tool generated may come as slightly surprising, it can potentially be attributed to its unique positioning and ability to let users create their own character.

But what makes its rise even more crazy is that SEMrush did not have any traffic data on Janitor AI before May 2023, which was also when their Twitter account was created.

While we couldn’t find an exact launch date, this shows the rapid pace at which this chatbot grew.

Take a look at the numbers below:

Top 5 AI Traffic Losers: Net Loss Analysis

AI traffic Losers

We further wanted to understand consumer behavior by identifying the biggest losers in traffic over the period we studied. This can help us understand what isn’t working so the industry can better understand the pitfalls and mistakes that cause traffic loss.

1. Craiyon (Net Loss: 15M Visits)

During the study period from September 2022 to August 2023, experienced a reduction of 15 million visits in total. Being a free AI image generator, a potential explanation could be the industry's evolution with more competition.

  • Launched: April 2022
  • Number of Months Considered: 12 months
  • Total Traffic (Sep 22 - Aug 23): 128083544 (128.1M)
  • Average Monthly Traffic: 10.7M

  • Average Monthly Traffic Loss: 787.7K

3. Quillbot (Net Loss: 5M Visits)

Quillbot's total traffic count decreased by 5 million during the year-long study. As Quillbot is part of the AI writing category, this can also be explained by it losing out to gainers, particularly from the chatbot category which may have replaced some of its use cases.

  • Launched: December 2017
  • Number of Months Considered: 12 months
  • Total Traffic (Sep 22 - Aug 23): 1134118471 (1.1B)
  • Average Monthly Traffic: 94.6M
  • Net Loss in Traffic: 5.1M
  • Average Monthly Traffic Loss: 461.4K

4. Jasper (Net Loss: 1.27M Visits)

Next, we have Jasper, which also encountered a drop in web traffic, with a total decline of 1.27 million traffic from September 2022 to August 2023.

Jasper was one of the earliest AI writing tools on the market and was available before ChatGPT was publicly launched. However, with a wave of competition and bigger chatbot category players like Open AI’s ChatGPT & Google’s Bard, it saw a drop in traffic.

  • Launched: February 2021
  • Number of Months Considered: 12 months
  • Total Traffic (Sep 22 - Aug 23): 94928983 (94.9M)

Top 20 Countries With the Most AI Users

Top 20 Countries With the Most AI Users

Next, we wanted to understand where the interest in AI is coming from.

The United States secures the #1 spot.

Over the studied 12 months, the US has generated 5.5 billion visits to the AI industry, translating into 22.62% of the total traffic

While the US has a smaller population than China and India, this doesn’t come as a big surprise as the US is home to the world’s leading tech market worth over $1.8 trillion.

India follows the US, with an impressive 2.1 billion visits, equaling 8.52% of the traffic.

Again, India is also known for its impressive tech market that’s known as one of the largest exporters of IT and BPO services globally, so it’s no surprise that the interest in the country is much larger than in other countries, especially since India has a 1.4 billion population.

Next, India is followed by Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brazil. All three of these nations have extremely similar interest levels, generating 1.3 to 1.4 billion visits over the past year.

Behind India, Indonesia, and the Philippines are the leading Asian countries for AI interest, which can be explained by their large populations and exciting tech startup scenes.

Brazil takes the leadership position in South America.  It has generated almost double the amount of traffic as the next in line, the UK, Japan, and Germany.

Interestingly, China did not rank in the top 20 countries despite its 1.4 billion population.

However, this can be explained by the countriestech giants developing their own native-language AI tools alongside China regulating AI.

Regarding the geographical behavior of the top 50 AI tools analyzed, China ranked 47th.

Our data shows that Europe, along with Australia and Canada, lags behind in AI investments and adoption. All EU countries combined generated 3.9 billion in traffic, comprising 16.21% of the total. Most top AI companies are US-based, with a minority in Asia.

Some speculate this may also stem from regulation fears, as the EU already established its first regulation act on AI. A recent study even suggests that many current AI models don't comply with the EU’s regulation of AI.

But this isn’t a recent discovery, and it’s been a consistent pattern since 2008, though there has been a steady increase.

AI Industry: Usage by Category

In our next section, we’d like to explore the different usage of AI categories and consumer behavior across the industry’s tools. Our objective for this section is to identify areas of growth and improvement.

Top 50 AI Tools by Category

Top 50 AI Tools by Category

The graph is a representation of the AI tools in the industry. This distribution gives a glimpse into the areas of AI that are currently gaining traction.

Of the top 50 most visited AI tools, the "Image Generator" category is the biggest category with 14 tools.

Following this, the "AI Chatbot" category holds 8 tools, while "AI Writing Generator" has 7.

Both "Video Generator" and "Voice & Music" categories have 5 tools each.

The "Design" category features 4 tools, and are 7 tools categorized under "Others."

Most Visited AI Tools by Category

Most Visited AI Tools by Category

One of the most interesting observations of our study is found in the measurement of the most visited categories.

Despite being vastly outnumbered in the number of tools, AI chatbots generate the largest traffic share, with a staggering 19.1 billion visits. And it’s not even close, as AI writing trails behind with 1.7 billion traffic over the period.

This can be explained by the popularity and use cases of tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard that can be used for:

  • Writing and content creation
  • Education and General Knowledge
  • Translation and Transliteration
  • Brainstorming and Assistance in planning
  • Product recommendations
  • Data Entry and Processing
  • Different types of Analysis

Almost any industry or role can find frequent use for AI chatbots to enhance productivity. Hence, the category generates more traffic.

This is also further highlighted by the popularity of AI writing tools. Although Chatbots can also serve that need to a certain extent, specialized AI writing tools also have a big piece of the traffic, with 1.7 billion visits generated.

Ranked closely behind the AI writing categories are image generators, which also doesn’t come as a big surprise since there has been massive interest in image generators like Midjourney across different sectors.

They generated 1.6 billion visits in the period.

The image generator is followed by video generators and voice & music tools, which share the next rank as both generated 0.4 billion visits over the period.

Finally, Data Science is the next biggest category, generating 0.3 billion visits. All other categories combined generated 0.7 billion.

Most Visited AI Chatbot Tools

Most Visited AI Chatbot Tools

Open AI’s ChatGPT leads the pack, commanding a staggering 76.31% of the total visits of the AI Chatbot category.

Following at a distance, Character AI secured the second spot with 19.86% of the visits.

Other contenders like Google’s Bard, Janitor AI, Perplexity AI,, Crushon AI, and Personal AI each generated less than 2% of the total visits. But remember that Bard is growing and didn’t launch until March 2023.

The fragmented distribution among the other tools suggests a competitive landscape where many strive to establish a significant foothold.

AI Industry: Tools by Average Usage Duration

AI Industry Tools by Average Usage Duration

Analyzing average usage duration, tools such as Character AI, Dezgo, and Janitor AI, stand out, consistently engaging users for over 25 minutes per visit.

This may suggest not only a captivating user experience but potentially more comprehensive functionalities for specific purposes.

On the other hand, the broader industry average rests at 12 minutes and 34 seconds.

While many tools, including the biggest players like Open AI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, cluster around this mean, the aforementioned leaders notably outpace their peers in duration.

Interestingly, ChatGPT and Bard have failed to dwell on their users extensively compared to other industry players like Character AI, Dezgo, and Janitor AI.

However, this may also be explained by the fact that their feature sets are used for longer-form queries, whereas ChatGPT and Bard can also be used for quick-fire answers.

AI Industry: Tools by Bounce Rate

AI Industry: Tools by Bounce Rate

Navigating to bounce rates, platforms like Google Bard, Crushon, and Opus lead the pack with commendable low rates, indicating a robust first impression and high-quality user experience on their initial pages.

These tools could be used as benchmarks for ambitious AI companies who want to aim for the best usability.

Contrastingly, the overall industry benchmark for bounce rate is set at 59.7%. While numerous tools, such as ChatGPT and Jasper, lie near this average, others at the higher end exhibit marked room for improvement.

AI Industry: Traffic Source, Device, and Gender

Next, we aimed to delve deeper into the AI audience demographics, scrutinizing Traffic Source, Device, and Gender. This exploration intended to refine our engagement strategies, ensuring tailored interactions and enhanced understanding of AI's diverse user base for more effective optimization.

AI Tools by Traffic Channel

AI Tools by Traffic Channel

Observing the distribution of AI tool users by traffic channel, a significant 80.53% of users access these tools directly, pointing to a well-established user base or frequent repeat visitors.

Organic search trails behind with 11.40%, suggesting effective SEO strategies among these platforms. Referrals constitute 6.73%, highlighting partnerships or word of mouth through users.

Interestingly, despite the rise of AI on social media, organic social brings in just 1.02% of the traffic, possibly indicating an area of opportunity.

Paid search and others contribute minimally, with 0.21% and 0.12%, respectively, suggesting limited investment in paid advertising for these AI tools.

AI Tool Users by Device

AI Tool Users by Device

Analyzing the AI tool usage by platform, a predominant 63.20% of users access these tools via mobile devices, underscoring the importance of mobile-responsive designs and applications in the AI sector.

It also may further highlight how the earlier mentioned traffic drop has something to do with Open AI launching its apps.

Conversely, desktop users make up 36.80% of the total, indicating that while there's still a significant number of users accessing tools from traditional platforms, the importance of mobile optimization is evident.

This distribution accentuates the ongoing trend of mobile-centricity in technology and the need for AI tool developers to prioritize mobile-friendly interfaces and functionalities.

AI Tool by Gender

AI Tool by Gender

The AI tool usage by gender data shows a notable disparity: 69.5% of the users are male, while 30.5% are female.

This highlights a gender gap in utilizing these AI tools, which could also stem from underlying differences in tech roles.

The pronounced difference may prompt industry leaders to investigate the underlying causes, whether societal, educational, or promotional barriers.

Final Thoughts

We wanted to conclude with final thoughts on the AI industry and the data discussed throughout this study.

As we have seen throughout our study, the AI industry is growing rapidly. Despite a 1.2 billion traffic pullback in the industry after the peak around May, we still believe that the industry will continue to grow as adoption and innovation increase.

Key players like Open AI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard will be at the forefront of this continuous rise.

Bard, in particular, has much more to come as it only launched in late March this year with geographical restrictions.

As we’re still in the early stage of this exciting industry, we also believe there will be more disruptions and market shifts in the future.

We hope this study has been a helpful indicator of the AI industry’s interest, areas for improvement, and opportunities.
